Bonjour! My name is Marie-Louise Hannan and I recently moved to Sydney with my family from Gatineau, Quebec, though I am originally from Orillia, Ontario. I'm a Canadian foreign service officer, and we came to Australia on a four-year diplomatic posting to the Consulate General of Canada in Sydney. My role at the Consulate is Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner, so I manage the proactive trade and investment attraction/servicing work of a team of 10 locally-engaged and Canadian staff. We work with Canadian clients across several priority sectors to help them pursue their business plans in Australia, in partnership with our contacts here. My previous postings were to Boston, Taiwan and Malaysia, with shorter assignments to China and India, and a one-month temporary duty in Sydney back in 1999. Before joining the foreign service, I lived in Montreal and studied at both McGill and Universite de Montreal. In addition to French and English, I speak Mandarin Chinese and can get by in Malay and Welsh.

A native of North Wales, I met my husband Gareth Jones while on posting to Taiwan. Gareth recently began working for the engineering and professional services firm Arup to build on his experience as an engineer and project manager for the rail and energy sectors. Gareth is also a co-founder of Spouses Without Borders, an organization whose mission is to help their members, accompanying spouses on foreign assignments, to have positive and rewarding experiences when posted abroad or returning to Canada. We have one child, a five-year old boy named Caleb, who attends the Lycee Condorcet (French International School) in Maroubra. We are enjoying living in Double Bay and have explored the Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves, Manly and have enjoyed day trips to Newcastle, Palm Beach, Royal National Park and longer visits to Brisbane since our arrival. We joined the Maroubra to Clovelly walk with the Canadian Australian Club recently and found it very enjoyable. We look forward to meeting more of the Club's members at a monthly mixer soon, and to celebrating Canada Day together in July.
