The club recently got an email from a Tim Cohen, who works for International Consultants Centre (ICC), a global HR Mobility Company, as Intercultural Consultant. They have been asked to deliver a cross-cultural briefing for a senior executive and his wife heading out to Edmonton, Canada.  Tim was looking for people who have either lived or worked there who would be able to speak to the couple on how best to be effective and prepare. The session is on 6th February in Sydney.

The primary aim of ICC Cross Cultural programs are to equip International Assignees with the skills, knowledge and strategies necessary to achieve maximum effectiveness and well being in their new environment.  The focus is on practical cultural preparation which addresses business, social and family concerns related to living and working in the host location.

Tim is looking to bring in 3 different resource people that can speak about the following topics for about an hour – if the person is not in Brisbane then we would run it via teleconference.

    1. Country Profile

Broad socio-historical overview, political structures and system, economic issues, religion, language, social structures and issues, general etiquette

    2. Workplace Culture

Power structures, management & decision making styles, office culture,  business etiquette, communication

    3. Daily Living Issues

Housing, schooling, shopping, driving and public transport, medical facilities, leisure activities, security

    ICC pays for these services.

If you want to know more or be put in contact with Tim, you can email him directly on Tim.Cohen@myicc.com

    Patricia Alldritt  (1936-2011)

Part of the Canadian Australian Club’s rich history has sadly left us with the passing of club founder and long-time champion, Pat Alldritt, who passed away peacefully at home on Dec 29th, 2011.

Hailing from Canadian-Scottish stock, Pat first visited Australia in 1958, meeting her husband-to-be that same year.  Originally from Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Pat returned in 1960 to marry Ralph becoming one of the first “CanAustradian” couples of what would later become the Canadian Australian Club.

Responsible, with friends, for the creation of the CAC back in 1967, Pat has always been an indomitable spirit of the club, having served in many offices including serving yet again on the 2011 Committee.  A wee bit of club history puts this in perspective:

    • In the early 1960's, two predominant groups of Canadians were present in Sydney - Canadian businessmen, who would meet regularly for lunch, and The Canadian War Brides who lived mainly on the North Shore who met regularly in each other’s homes. At the same time, younger groups of Canadians, mostly travellers, had already started meeting at the Hyde Park Hotel. In 1967, the year of the Canadian Centenary, a ball was held at the Hotel Australia with the High Commissioner as a guest of Honour and this was the event that brought these Canadian compatriots together.

The Canadian Australian Club was formally registered with the State Government of New South Wales in 1967, the year of Canada’s Centenary.”

Pat’s irrepressible wit stood her in good stead during her recent courageous battle with cancer and, regardless of her condition, Pat could be found at all manner of CAC functions – small and large – waving the flag for club and country.

Pat leaves behind her loving husband, Ralph, her daughter Jane, her son Steve, her sister Jean and a wide circle of family, relations and friends both here and in Canada.

A private family service has already been held.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, 9th January at 10:30am at the Scots Kirk Presbyterian Church, 9 Belmont Rd, Mosman, NSW, 2088. (intersection of Gladstone Ave) – CAC members are welcome to attend.  Pat’s wishes were for consideration to be given to the Salvo’s in lieu of flowers.

At the recent AGM the club voted to make changes to our constitution. For those not familiar with club procedures, the constitution is a document that all clubs and non-profit organisations like ours must have. It defines the rules and procedures of what we can and can't do as a club, and how those things should be done. It describes who we are and how we behave, as well as giving a clear statement of the way we operate so that all members are clear about the way decisions get made.

The most recent changes were designed to streamline the operations of the elected committee and make the task of serving on the committee less onerous and simpler to perform. It reduced the size of the committee to a more manageable number. The changes removed some red tape, and made it easier for the committee to keep the club running effectively.

You can find a fully updated version of the latest constitution at http://www.canadianaustralianclub.com/constitution  (Members only, requires a login)

(The new smaller committee will be much better... It should be noted that for the first time since I can remember, we finished an AGM with EVERY committee position filled).

(as taken from the CBC news)

Winnipeg musician Sean Quigley is winning praise for a new video, posted to YouTube, featuring a fierce rendition of the traditional Christmas song Little Drummer Boy.

Quigley's version was shot using familiar Winnipeg streets and locales and takes full advantage of heavy amounts of snow.

The video was uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday and soared from an initial viewing number of around 4,000 to over 41,000 views, or hits, in less than a day.

"Wow. This why I'm proud to be Canadian," one commentator on the site said after viewing the video.

"This is amazing!" wrote another. "I'm a Winnipegger living in California now, but I'll be home for Christmas. It's so good to see glimpses of home!! Good job, Sean!"

Quigley, 16, was moved to create the video because of the underlying message of the song.

"Drummer Boy speaks to me so much," he said. "The whole song is a story. It's about this boy who gets word of Jesus being born and he goes to see him and he doesn't have anything to give him; he's like 'I don't have money, I don't have gifts to give you. But I can play my drum and that's more than enough'."

The teen's production is all the more remarkable considering he played all the instruments, sang the vocals, recorded everything and directed and edited the video.

Quigley is a student at Oak Park High School in Winnipeg.

[Oups] by La Vouivre – French contemporary performance
co-produced by French Music and Dance Company

A day before Christmas eve, the 23rd of December, ushers one of the most innovative duos of the French Contemporary Ballet scene, La Vouivre, who will be performing their signature show [Oups] at the Tom Mann Theatre in Surry Hills.

The dancers and choreographers, Berengere Fournier and Samuel Faccioli - a remarkable couple, united both in life and on stage - will showcase an unforgettable performance. They will take you on a journey, a melange of dance and theatre,  something extraordinary, never seen  before in Australia.

Using poetry and humour, [Oups] portrays the initial stages of a couple’s relationship, intensifying the drama with precise and exacting alacrity to create a beguiling interpretation of their journey. From sweet naive touches to unbridled passion, the dance is inspired by everyday gestures, transforming them into an alternative sign language.

The duet plays with contrast, cleverly crafted with juxtaposition; and whether they are playful or sombre, their approach is spiked with satire.

Precision and accuracy are the cornerstones of this duo as well as sensitivity, humour and acrobatics.

Their subject is the human, his dreams and fantasies, which they explore with superb subtlety, demonstrating every nuance. Their performance abounds with fresh fortuity, parody and vigor.

While on holiday in Australia with their new born baby, Zadig, Berengere and Samuel as La Vouivre have taken the opportunity to present their work to the Sydney scene with the view of bringing their new show named Pardi}, to the Sydney Opera House next year.

Reserve your seat amongst the 300 people in the audience to sit in on this conceptual  and sensory delight.
     youtube link:  http://www.youtube.com/user/ vlalavouivre#p/a/f/0/4nUyE_ NV33k

This performance is kindly sponsored by Nespresso.

In France, La Vouivre is supported by The Conseil General du Puys de Dome, La Drac, ADAMI et le centre Choregraphic de Lyon Comedie de Clermont Ferrand, Centre Choregraphique National - Ballets du Rhin.
