I am 27 years old and originally from Toronto, Canada. I originally came to Sydney on Working Holiday with a friend I'd met while travelling Europe.

I've recently moved to Rhodes, but have lived in the city/Eastern Suburbs for the majority of the time.

Although I've been in Sydney for nearly 5 years, I've found it a bit challenging to meet people that aren't travellers. I'm lucky to have a group of close friends I've met at various jobs/events and look forward to meeting some others :) I'm open to doing new things so really up for anything exciting!

I love yoga, travelling and cooking- you will find me breathing these daily!

The big ice hockey game in June is supported by a superb fundraising organisation, Stop Concussions.Com. More information about this great group is below:

Stopconcussions is a not-for-profit national organization that was established to educate and advocate on the cause, effects, and consequences of concussions and neurotrama injuries.

Founded by players and alumni, medical professionals, trainers, and various key sports associations, they have developed and executed key programs that reduce the incidence of catastrophic injuries in all sports. They believe that through education and skills development they can significantly reduce the number of concussions and injuries while enhancing the quality of sport and sportsmanship.

Across North America, they are having meaningful discussions with hockey players of all ages and their families, coaches, and organizations about avoiding, assessing, and eliminating concussions from our national sports. The good news is we are gaining momentum.

In Ontario, 44 people sustain a brain injury EVERY DAY.

The annual incidence of TBI is greater than that of multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS, and Breast Cancer combined.

Brain injury from trauma is the greatest killer under the age of 45; the greatest cause of disability under 44; and kills more children under 20 than all other causes combined.

An average estimate is that every night in Canada during the hockey season, 54 male hockey players between 15 to 20 years old go to bed with a concussion.

Too many children are going to bed tonight with undiagnosed concussions.

This year the Quebec Oz Club will celebrate Saint-Jean Baptiste on a Sunday. Their friends from Cavalia will also come to the party, as they are touring in Australia and will be in Sydney. On the menu you will find poutine (this year it will be the best because they found the Poutine cheese that is similar to the one in Quebec), meat pie (Quebec's style), shepherd's pie (Quebec's style), quiche, pouding aux chomeurs, Quebec beer, live music, Quebec music and many surprises. Entrance fee $15 (includes one drink i.e. beer, wine or non alcoholic beverage). They will also have the honour to have Mr. Mario Ste-Marie and his familly as guests.

The Newport Ocean Waves Square Dancing Club is inviting CAC members to come to the Open House of the Newport Ocean Waves Square Dancing on Tuesday, 11th June. The Newport Club is very excited about their Golden Jubilee this year, and they would be thrilled if CAC members would be there to share it with them.

    Mary Culshaw's story.....

In August 2010 Mary Culshaw saw an advertisement in the Manly Daily for Square Dancing on a Tuesday night, at the Ted Blackwood Hall in Jackson Road, Warriewood, Northern Beaches. It appealed to her curiosity and then she was quick to pull out all the excuses. She wouldn’t be able to get a bus (She doesn’t drive) but darn it, there was one ‘door to door’. The list went on but she decided to try it.

First impression: Warm Smiles, people came up to her to draw her into their circle.

It is not just Country and Western music, all types of music are played. Since then, after starting with 2 left feet, she can now enjoy herself on the dance floor.

A club can never have too many members, and they are looking for males, females, and couple's (in all configurations) who are in the over 40’s age group.

Guys, don’t be shy! it is great fun ‘If you don’t go, you will never know’

They dance from 8-10P.M. and have supper from 10-10-30 P.M.

The first night you are their guest, after that it costs $8. They do ask you try them out for 3 weeks to see if Square Dancing is for you.

Event: Newport Ocean Waves Square Dancing

Place: Ted Blackwood Hall, just off Pittwater & Jackson Road Warriewood 2102

Date: Tuesday night June 11th 2013.

    Time: Dancing 7-45 for 8p.m until 10p.m

    Supper: 10-10-30

Contact Mary Culshaw at marysbooklist@gmail.com. Put "Square Dance New Member Query" in the subject line. Please advise Mary if you are coming alone, or the number of other people coming with you.

Sauce for the Goose: a French play about love and marriage

The Sydney French Theatre is glad to present you its new production Sauce for the Goose, an adaptation of the French play «Le Dindon» by Georges Feydeau, the master farceur. In this well-known French comedy, infidelity and hypocrisy are the perfect ingredients to create a bomb that puts at stake the institution of marriage. Brought to you by a group of local Francophiles (a mix of French-born, local Australians and native Spanish-speaking) this fast-paced comedy is full of jokes and displays a series of amazing behaviours.

"The story is about a man- the womanizer Mr. Pontagnac- who cannot help but chase after every woman he happens to meet - even when it appears the woman he is chasing is the wife of one of his friends. It's a story about a woman who cannot stand being cheated on and decides to take action. It's a story of a couple -Mr. and Mrs Vatelin- who, while still in love, take advantage of their partner's absence to enjoy lovers. It's a story with a happy ending even though marital life seems less glorious afterwards.

The play will be performed in French with English subtitles. Don't miss this fast-paced and energetic comedy.

Box Office:$20 - Book your seats online here.
Or Pay at the door (on the basis of first arrived, first served)

Bonjour! My name is Marie-Louise Hannan and I recently moved to Sydney with my family from Gatineau, Quebec, though I am originally from Orillia, Ontario. I'm a Canadian foreign service officer, and we came to Australia on a four-year diplomatic posting to the Consulate General of Canada in Sydney. My role at the Consulate is Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner, so I manage the proactive trade and investment attraction/servicing work of a team of 10 locally-engaged and Canadian staff. We work with Canadian clients across several priority sectors to help them pursue their business plans in Australia, in partnership with our contacts here. My previous postings were to Boston, Taiwan and Malaysia, with shorter assignments to China and India, and a one-month temporary duty in Sydney back in 1999. Before joining the foreign service, I lived in Montreal and studied at both McGill and Universite de Montreal. In addition to French and English, I speak Mandarin Chinese and can get by in Malay and Welsh.

A native of North Wales, I met my husband Gareth Jones while on posting to Taiwan. Gareth recently began working for the engineering and professional services firm Arup to build on his experience as an engineer and project manager for the rail and energy sectors. Gareth is also a co-founder of Spouses Without Borders, an organization whose mission is to help their members, accompanying spouses on foreign assignments, to have positive and rewarding experiences when posted abroad or returning to Canada. We have one child, a five-year old boy named Caleb, who attends the Lycee Condorcet (French International School) in Maroubra. We are enjoying living in Double Bay and have explored the Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves, Manly and have enjoyed day trips to Newcastle, Palm Beach, Royal National Park and longer visits to Brisbane since our arrival. We joined the Maroubra to Clovelly walk with the Canadian Australian Club recently and found it very enjoyable. We look forward to meeting more of the Club's members at a monthly mixer soon, and to celebrating Canada Day together in July.
