BT Toronto goes LIVE from Sydney Australia

Linda and I went down to Campbells Cove at The Rocks tonight to watch a live episode of the Breakfast Television show go to air. We met up with Janina from BT who was coordinating the activities, and we got to watch a couple of short segments being shot.

We also met a couple of new members to the club, Andrew and Jalyn, who just recently moved to Australia from Canada via Chicago. We all got to appear on the show with the live anchor Jenn Valentyne, and we got a chance to promote the club as well as send a hello message to friends and family back in Toronto.

We actually had quite a few club members register their names to come along to the shoot but apart from Andrew, Jal, Linda and myself no one else showed, which was a little disappointing.

Anyway, it was a fun experience, and a great opportunity to promote the club. It will be interesting to watch our website stats over the next few days to see if the promotion actually had any effect!

The club recently received an email from one of the producers of Breakfast Television Toronto. It seems that they are doing a segment about Australia, and will be shooting it live in Sydney on the evening of Tuesday May 15. They have invited club members to come down to the shoot, hang out, and say hi to friends and family back at home.

It would also be an excellent PR opportunity for the club as well.

If you're free on the evening of the 15th, come join us. There is an event in the coming events list where you can add your name if you plan to attend.

Hi everyone, after a one year sabbatical from the CAC committee – I’m back! I’ve worn many hats over my time here with the club – committee member, Newsletter Editor and President. And now I’m back to help with Membership. While we no longer have a full blown newsletter each month – we do try to bring you all some news about the club. So, I wanted to let you know… We’ve had a marriage and most recently a marriage proposal in our club. Firstly, after 9 years together Mick Patterson and I tied the knot in November last year. And on Valentine’s Day this year, Chris Betcher and Linda Johannesson got engaged. I also want to say welcome to some of our new members: Nick & Roma. Nick was born in the small town of Lac Megantic in the Eastern Townships in Quebec. He left for Beijing in 2005 to study Mandarin and then settled and worked there for 5 years first as a Business Consultant with the Canada China Business Council and later on for a Canadian engineering firm building Winter Sport Facilities. While in Beijing Nick met his Australian partner Roma. After 3 years of shared life in Beijing, Roma convinced Nick to make a move to Sydney, arriving for Christmas 2011. Nick & Roma are residing in Baulkham Hills with Roma’s family. Nick advises he is actively looking to get back to work and hope to eventually to settle in a more central location near the City. When asked why Nick decided to join the CAC his response was… “I still have everything to discover about Sydney and hope the Club can help me learn more about this great country and by meeting other fellow Canadians I am hoping it will help me feel closer to home.” Jaylene & Adam - first moved to Perth from Vancouver, Canada at the end of Aug of 2011. Jaylene's fiance Adam got a job opportunity there as a project manager for a crane company. He was then given the opportunity to move to Sydney in December to be a contracts manager for a different crane company. His job is going great and they love Sydney. Jaylene is now looking for an HR Administrator role here in Sydney. Jaylene & Adam are renting an apartment in Breakfast Point and are looking forward to meeting some more Canadians. Andrew & Jayln - moved to Sydney this year because they wanted to try somewhere new, and Sydney was the first place to offer one of them a job! Jalyn grew up in Dundas, Ontario, but is a Calgarian at heart after living most of her adult life there. Andrew is originally from Brisbane, but is also an adopted Calgarian after living many years there. Most recently they were in Chicago, where they moved in 2010. They are living on the harbour in Drummoyne, which by lovely coincidence is part of the city of Canada Bay! Why I Almost Quit Swimming, and Why I Didn't

As the 2012 Summer Games draws closer and the swimming trials for the Aussie athletes have passed, it's easy to forget about the committed Canadians who are trying to get to London. Here is a great blog that gives us regular folk an insight to what goes through their minds.

Julia Wilkinson achieved a life-long goal when she competed in the Olympics in 2008 in Beijing. But she struggled to deal with the letdowns, emotional and physical, that followed.

As the Canadian Olympic swimming trials draw closer, I find myself reminiscing more and more about the 2008 Games in Beijing.

On one hand, it seems like no time has passed since I was flying from Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston to Montreal with dreams of qualifying for my first Olympic team.

My Texas A&M teammates threw me a "good luck" surprise party, and gave me a poster with the Olympic rings drawn on it and little notes from each of them. I still have the poster. In fact, it's hanging in my bathroom in Victoria, and I read at least one of the messages every single day. Today when I was looking at it, I couldn't believe that, in just over two weeks, it'll be time for good luck all over again.

If I close my eyes, I can still picture walking out for my 100-metre backstroke final at the Olympic trials four years ago. And yet, it was a lifetime ago because so much has happened since I hit that wall first and was named to the Olympic team.

I was so excited, so naÃ¯ve. I think I believed that the skies would open up and my life would all fall into place now that I was "going to the Olympics," the single goal I had chased to my entire life. While other kids were telling our elementary school teachers that they wanted to be singers or doctors or whatever was fancying them that particular day, I never wavered. From the moment I started swimming competitively when I was eight years old, I wanted to be an Olympian.

Life goes on

So you can imagine my shock when I returned from the Olympics and found my life to be essentially the same as it was when I left. Only this time, I had no concrete life goal. I still had one more year of eligibility at Texas A&M, so naturally I knew I would keep swimming. But otherwise, I felt a bit lost.

To make matters worse, within my first week back in the pool, the nagging shoulder pain that ailed me the previous season had come back with a vengeance. It only took one MRI to let me know that it wasn't, as I had believed for an entire year, tendonitis. It was actually a SLAP (Superior Labrum from Anterior to Posterior) tear in my shoulder, large enough to require surgery. On October 2, 2008, less than two months after I had stood on the blocks in Beijing, I went under the knife with the hope that it would save my swimming career.

Since I'm sitting here today, writing about the upcoming Olympic trials, you all know how that story ended. I was able to regain full use of my right shoulder, although it still likes to remind me, once in a while, that it's much more of a diva than my left. My point is, however, that after the skies did not open when I made the Olympic team and I returned home only to be put in a sling on the sidelines, I lost it a little bit. As my mom would say, it was a bit of a "cluster-you-know-what."

During those months when I couldn't train, I spent a long time trying to figure out what exactly I was swimming for. Was I doing it for the wrong reasons? I hadn't left the Olympics as a celebrity because, let's face it, seventh in the world is good, but it's not picture-on-a-cereal-box good. I did not want to believe that I was working so hard every day because I wanted celebrity status. Heck, I should've just tried out for an MTV reality show if that was what I wanted.

Through the trenches

It's taken me a long time to realize something that is probably very obvious to many. What an athlete gains from going to the Olympics does not come during those two weeks in the village. It's not even in that moment when you're officially announced onto the Canadian team.

It's every moment before that. Every time you roll out of bed when you feel like you've been hit by a truck. Every time you push yourself in a workout to the point where you need to run to the closest trash can and throw up. Every time you decide to pick yourself back up off the ground.

When I was injured, I was in a very negative place and giving up seemed like a viable option. I had already been to one Olympics. Why did I need two? But somewhere within all that negativity there was a little voice that was whispering to me about the Olympic podium. That's more than a goal. It's a responsibility that I feel to myself, and to everyone who helped pick me up when I was down. To the taxpayers who fund our sport and want to see us bring home medals. I could not give up.

So, yes, it's strange that the Olympic trials are already upon me again. But I'm not the swimmer I was four years ago. Not even close.

I've been through the trenches now, and I've collected enough bullets so that I can shoot back.

Looking for people to share information about Canada

The club recently got an email from a Tim Cohen, who works for International Consultants Centre (ICC), a global HR Mobility Company, as Intercultural Consultant. They have been asked to deliver a cross-cultural briefing for a senior executive and his wife heading out to Edmonton, Canada. Tim was looking for people who have either lived or worked there who would be able to speak to the couple on how best to be effective and prepare. The session is on 6^th February in Sydney.

The primary aim of ICC Cross Cultural programs are to equip International Assignees with the skills, knowledge and strategies necessary to achieve maximum effectiveness and well being in their new environment. The focus is on practical cultural preparation which addresses business, social and family concerns related to living and working in the host location.

Tim is looking to bring in 3 different resource people that can speak about the following topics for about an hour – if the person is not in Brisbane then we would run it via teleconference.

*1. Country Profile*	Broad socio-historical overview, political structures and system, economic issues, religion, language, social structures and issues, general etiquette
*2. Workplace Culture*	Power structures, management & decision making styles, office culture, business etiquette, communication
*3. Daily Living Issues*	Housing, schooling, shopping, driving and public transport, medical facilities, leisure activities, security

ICC pays for these services.

Pat Alldritt (1936-2011) - Club Founder & Champion

Patricia Alldritt (1936-2011)

Part of the Canadian Australian Club’s rich history has sadly left us with the passing of club founder and long-time champion, Pat Alldritt, who passed away peacefully at home on Dec 29^th, 2011.

Hailing from Canadian-Scottish stock, Pat first visited Australia in 1958, meeting her husband-to-be that same year. Originally from Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Pat returned in 1960 to marry Ralph becoming one of the first “CanAustradian” couples of what would later become the Canadian Australian Club.

Responsible, with friends, for the creation of the CAC back in 1967, Pat has always been an indomitable spirit of the club, having served in many offices including serving yet again on the 2011 Committee. A wee bit of club history puts this in perspective:

In the early 1960's, two predominant groups of Canadians were present in Sydney - Canadian businessmen, who would meet regularly for lunch, and The Canadian War Brides who lived mainly on the North Shore who met regularly in each other’s homes. At the same time, younger groups of Canadians, mostly travellers, had already started meeting at the Hyde Park Hotel. In 1967, the year of the Canadian Centenary, a ball was held at the Hotel Australia with the High Commissioner as a guest of Honour and this was the event that brought these Canadian compatriots together.

The Canadian Australian Club was formally registered with the State Government of New South Wales in 1967, the year of Canada’s Centenary.”

Pat’s irrepressible wit stood her in good stead during her recent courageous battle with cancer and, regardless of her condition, Pat could be found at all manner of CAC functions – small and large – waving the flag for club and country.

Pat leaves behind her loving husband, Ralph, her daughter Jane, her son Steve, her sister Jean and a wide circle of family, relations and friends both here and in Canada.

A private family service has already been held. A memorial service will be held on Monday, 9^th January at 10:30am at the Scots Kirk Presbyterian Church, 9 Belmont Rd, Mosman, NSW, 2088. (intersection of Gladstone Ave) – CAC members are welcome to attend. Pat’s wishes were for consideration to be given to the Salvo’s in lieu of flowers.

Recent Constitutional changes

At the recent AGM the club voted to make changes to our constitution. For those not familiar with club procedures, the constitution is a document that all clubs and non-profit organisations like ours must have. It defines the rules and procedures of what we can and can't do as a club, and how those things should be done. It describes who we are and how we behave, as well as giving a clear statement of the way we operate so that all members are clear about the way decisions get made.

The most recent changes were designed to streamline the operations of the elected committee and make the task of serving on the committee less onerous and simpler to perform. It reduced the size of the committee to a more manageable number. The changes removed some red tape, and made it easier for the committee to keep the club running effectively.

Winnipeg musician Sean Quigley is winning praise for a new video, posted to YouTube, featuring a fierce rendition of the traditional Christmas song Little Drummer Boy.

Quigley's version was shot using familiar Winnipeg streets and locales and takes full advantage of heavy amounts of snow.

The video was uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday and soared from an initial viewing number of around 4,000 to over 41,000 views, or hits, in less than a day.

"Wow. This why I'm proud to be Canadian," one commentator on the site said after viewing the video.

"This is amazing!" wrote another. "I'm a Winnipegger living in California now, but I'll be home for Christmas. It's so good to see glimpses of home!! Good job, Sean!"

Quigley, 16, was moved to create the video because of the underlying message of the song.

"Drummer Boy speaks to me so much," he said. "The whole song is a story. It's about this boy who gets word of Jesus being born and he goes to see him and he doesn't have anything to give him; he's like 'I don't have money, I don't have gifts to give you. But I can play my drum and that's more than enough'."
